The best option for utilization of leisure time
Increasing incomes and reduction in work hours may generate significant social repercussions in Kerala. This is already evident in the total collapse of the agriculture sector. The high wages and the diminishing returns due to high labor costs and lesser amount of time spent at work have wrecked havoc with the agrarian sector. Even in such a scenario the tourism sector has made significant gains. In Kerala vacation packages are now made affordable to one and all.
It is felt that in the future, the concept of ‘no-work’ would become as important as that of the right to work in Kerala state. Traditionally, training has been imparted in the area of how to work. Unfortunately, sufficient attention has not been given to the utilization of ‘leisure’. In some of the industrialized countries, the increase in ‘leisure’ time has today posed a serious problem as well as an opportunity.
In fact, the use of leisure time has become a subject of research in western consumer societies. Bertrand Russell has rightly said that “The art of using one’s leisure intelligently is a supreme sign of civilization. Surely tourism is the best form of using one’s ‘leisure’ time”.
Increase in income and growing transport facilities have made the modern individual more mobile, and have increased the prospects of tourism as a commodity of mass consumption, which would satisfy the needs of modern societies, particularly societies, with ample opportunities for leisure. The future patterns of tourism industry would therefore depend upon these factors.
Another social phenomenon which has influenced tourism in Kerala is the increase in the ‘longevity’ of individuals. As the proportion of old people i.e., those leading a retired life in the society has increased, it has affected the social structure. The problem of utilization of leisure time to its optimum extent has assumed greater importance in the case of old and retired people. Tourism can be considered as an appropriate activity to satisfy the needs of the new ‘leisure society’.
